GSMS – GMSPAZIO Satellite Mission Simulator

GSMS simulates the behaviour of a Remote Sensing System from a mission capabilities perspective.

GSMS engine is based on both AGI STK©, a specific COTS dedicated to space orbiting objects modeling, and features developed by GMSPAZIO, that offers GSMS under Windows 10 OS (64 bit).

GSMS allows to simulate realistic mission scenarios in order to verify the system performances, mission performances and figures of merit in a 3D modelling environment.

The software GUI is composed of 2D and 3D windows for visualization and tool interfaces to access GSMS analysis tools.

GSMS provides two different type of analysis:

  • The System Performance analysis, where the performances of the system are evaluated in terms of Single User Request scenario;
  • The Planner-Scheduler analysis, where the performances of the system are evaluated in terms of Multi-user Requests Handbook satisfaction.

The System Performance tool provides the performance of the satellite in terms of:

  1. Response time

The Response Time calculates the time elapsed between the user request submission deadline and the first acquisition opportunity of data products related toa specific target such as point, Area of Interest (AOI), Latitude belt or Regions list. Additional constraint to the evaluation, such as maximum Solar Zenith Angle or System Responsiveness, can be defined.

  1. Revisit time

The Revisit time calculates the time elapsed between the the user request submission deadline and the

second acquisition opportunity of data products related to a specific target such as point, Area of Interest (AOI), Latitude belt or Regions list.

        3. Information Age

The information age computes the time elapsed between the user request submission  deadline and the delivery of the data products to the final customer, accounting for the downlink data-rate, the processing rate and the availability of downlink ground stations.

The Planner-Scheduler simulates the performance of the satellite system and ground segment in a day-to-day multi-user operation scenario. It handles a handbook of desiderata coming from different users and evaluates the capability of the satellite to perform these acquisitions accounting for overall system, temporal, geometric, lighting constraints.

The tool models all the operations related to the users request handbook satisfaction, from TC uplink to the data product acquisition, the data downlink and the processing of the acquired data.

The resulting conflict-free schedule of activities is then represented in two different modes:

  • Animation, where the system activities are displayed on the 2D and 3D graphics windows;
  • Text & Graphs Reports, where the relevant information are displayed in text reports or chart describing the satisfied requests, the subsystems behaviour and satellite attitude, the data acquisition time
